When they cut leaves, they leave a characteristic oblong or circular cutout on the edge of the leaf or petal.

Several oblong leaf pieces line individual cells in the nest. The cell is filled with pollen and nectar, an egg is laid, it’s capped with round leaf pieces, and then the bee starts over collecting oblong leaf pieces. The result is a series of cells in a tunnel, each cell containing one offspring.
