Notes:
Idaho has been the #1 producer of winter hardy varieties of alfalfa seed for
a number of years. Only California produces more seed, primarily non-dormant
varieties for mild climates.
Over the past 10 years, approximately 350 growers have produced 15-30
million lbs. of alfalfa seed per year on 24-30,000 acres in Idaho.
Although alfalfa seed is a minor crop both in the national and state
economy, alfalfa forage is among the top five agricultural crops grown in
the US, and quality seed is the foundation of the forage industry.
